Azalea opened her eyes slowly. She was refreshed, possibly more than she had been in years.

                    "Rise and shine, Doc."

"I'm not a doctor. And how long have I been out?" She rubbed the sleep from her eyes.

                    "Fourteen hours."

She sat bolt upright. "Fourteen???? Fuck!"

Dani smiled. "Yeah, we did that too. Relax, everything is okay, nothing is going on. You just slept like the dead, that's all."

"I feel.... amazing. I haven't slept that well in forever.”

“Yeah, Solaris Spice has a long come down. Not something I’d do out in the field.”

“You take shit when you’re in combat?”

Dani Shrugged. “Not this kind of stuff, but stims, amphetamines and stuff, sure. Everyone needs an edge.”

Zee found her underwear and fatigue bottoms and slipped them on. “That kind of stuff can get you canned.”

Dani shook her head. “Not really. Most people look the other way. It’s not like most people do it. Whatever keeps you in the fight and gets you back again.”

“I can’t imagine working on stuff like that.”

Dani shrugged. “We do different stuff. What you do takes a lot of thinking. What I do, it’s a lot of reflexes and attention. Any edge you can get. It hasn’t hurt me so far. I’ve come back in one piece so far.”

“Thank you for last night. It was….incredible”

Dani smiled. “You might play Drax well, but you don’t have a poker face. Your eyes were all over me from the moment we met.”

            Zee blushed. “Sorry, I just-“

Dani cut her off with a finger to her lips. “No explaining. We all have to live a little out here. What’s the point of all this fighting if you don’t live a little?”

Zee shrugged. “I guess I’m wrestling with finding the point of it all. Sometimes I feel like I’m just running on autopilot.”

“How long have you been in?”

“Three years now. But I’ve only been a combat medic for a few months. It takes it’s toll.”

Dani put her hand on Zee’s shoulder. “It does. I’m six years in, and I’ve seen a ton of action, but it never gets any easier. You just keep going. You know how it is.”

Zee nodded. “Is that why you turned to that stuff?”

Dani chuckled. “Maybe. I don’t know where I picked up the habit. But it’s been good to me, kept me coming back to fight another day.”

Zee ran a hand through her hair. “That’s what we’re for, to keep you guys going.”

Dani nodded. “True, but sometimes a girl just needs a little more. I don’t expect you to follow me, but I’ve got your back, and I know you’ve got mine. One of these days I might be needing your kind of services out there. I know you’ll pull through.”

Zee’s mind went back to the poor Mechwarrior she had lost her first time in the field. She hadn’t known anything about him going in, but he had haunted her ever since. Now things were different. She was putting faces to the people that were going out there and putting their life on the line. Nothing stayed the same, it seemed.

"Lay down and enjoy it, girl."

Azalea Thomas leaned into her bunk andk lad back. She felt Dani slink into the bunk beside her.

"Close your eyes and just wait for it."

She obliged. She felt the gentle touch of Dani's finger against her arm, tracing a meandering pattern. She felt tingles, but she didn't know if it was from the drug she had just taken or the desire she felt for the woman laying next to her.

She twinged slightly as Dani slid her hand up under her shirt and gently rubbed her abdomen. The tingles increased. "It's okay. Let me know if anything is wrong, okay?"

Zee nodded and opened her eyes. She was staring into Dani's large brown eyes. "Everything is fine."

                    "Good."

Dani leaned in and kissed her softly and the tingling sensation washed over her face like a mask. "That's incredible!"

"Don't talk. Just let me lead you through it. I've got you."

And lead her through it she did. Within minutes, both of their clothes were cast aside and the skin on skin sensation seemed to increase with each touch or kiss. By the time Dani had worked her hand between Zee's legs, she was awash in invigorating sensations. Orgasm brought her to a whole different level, her eyes closed for most of it, her hands gripping the sheet as Dani brought her up and down in an almost perfect rhythm.

Her muscles were no longer under her control, she simply let things happen as Dani touched her in ways she had never been touched before. Every so often, Dani would check in with her, but she could never muster any words, only nods and moans.

Slowly, Dani brought her down, gently stroking her fingers over Zee's bare skin. Slowly, Zee got to a point where she could form words, but as she tried to speak, Dani stopped her.

"Don't talk. Just go to sleep. I've got you. Everything is fine."

With that, Azalea drifted off into one of the most peaceful sleeps in her life.

Azalea Thomas dropped her kit bag on the deck of the cabin she would be sharing for the next few weeks as they made their way to wherever their next target was.

                    "Top or bottom?"

She looked up to see her roomate for the first time.

"That's a loaded question." She didn't know why she blurted that out. She immediately started to blush. The woman looking back at her was gorgeous. She was dressed in the standard fatigues of the 5th Crucis Lancers, but Azalea didn't recognize her. That wasn't anything to remark on, she didn't know many of the people beyond the medical staff that she worked with.

The woman held out her hand. "Captain Danielle Waters. Most people call me Dani."

Azalea shook her hand. "Corporal Azalea Thomas. I'm a medic. People usually call me Zee"

"Well Zee, pleased to meet you. I'm a mechjock, if you hadn't guesed already. Guess we'll be berthed together until we get to wherever we are going."

Azalea smiled. "So you don't know where we're heading?"

"Not a clue. They don't tell us much. Operational security and all that. So, top or bottom?"

"Bottom, if that's okay with you?"

                    "Fine with me."

The two exchanged pleasantries as they all got settled in. Azalea tried to keep her cool, but she was drawn to this woman. Her pose, her figure, the subtle blonde highlights in her jet black hair that perfectly gelled with her flawless light brown skin.It wouldn't do to be crushing on her roomate for the next few weeks.

                    "So, you play cards?"

Azalea shrugged. "A little. I can play some Poker and some Drax. I'm not very good."

Well, the officers have a bit of a game going whenever we get some downtime, and you're more than welcome to tag along. We usually play Drax. It cuts through the monotonay of the space side run."

                    "Sure. Beats just hanging around."

                    "That's the spirit"

They made some small talk, getting to know one another, and the game of Drax made things easier. After a few hands, Zee felt comfortable enough around the group. She made several flirtatious comments towards Dani, but she wasn't sure if they hit or miss.

What was she doing? She had just had a fling with a Mechwarrior and now she was having the hots for her roomate? She felt like she was back in school again. They made their way back to their cabin. The bulkhead closed with a thud. Zee's pulse was racing.

"See, you weren't bad at all. You took the Major for a few hands, something he won't forget next time, mind you."

"I just felt like a fish out of water. You guys all know each other, and you're all Mechwarriors."

"Bullshit. You fit in fine, Zee."

"Well, it's good to have something to break the monontony. I hate the time in space. I don't get TDS or anything, I just hate not being on solid ground, you know?"

Dani smiled. "Yeah, I hear you. For me it's the waiting. I hate the downtime. I want to be in the thick of it, you know? Downtime can be fun and all, but there's nothing like the rush of piloting a mech into battle."

"Yeah, I get that. The adrenaline rush and all. I wasn't always a combat medic, I started out in the rear, very tame compared to being out in the field. I hated it at first, but it's kind of come to grow on me"

Dani tapped her on the shoulder. Tingles ran down her spine. "Speaking of a rush to beat the downtime, you want to try something?"

                    "What do you mean?"

Dani dug through one of her bags and removed a small black box. She opened it and inside were an assortment of various pills and capsules "You ever let loose? You know?"

"Can't say as I have. Isn't some of that shit illegal?"

"It's only illegal if you get caught. And sometimes not even then."

Zee shook her head. "What are you talking about?"

Dani shrugged. "We all have a little something to get us through the downtimes. For some it's booze, but I've never been into that. Seen too many good soldiers go down a bad path with that. But chems, you use them right, it helps a lot to get you through. You're a medic, you understand."

                    "I guess. I've just never..."

"It's cool. We don't have anything going on for days here in this hunk of metal. It won'tr affect your readiness of anything like that, if that's what's got you worried."

                    "No, it's not that."

"You were hitting on me prety hard back there at the Drax game. How about we just calm your nerves. Everything will be fine. Here."

She passed Zee a tiny pink pill. "What is it?"

"It's called Solaris Spice. It just takes the edge off, lets you relax a bit. Nothing trippy or anything like that, and it won't get you hooked. Won't show up on a standard screen either, if you're worried about that."

                    "No, it's cool. Thanks."

With that, she popped the tiny pill and waited.

Will Tanner sighed as he watched the sleeping form of Corporal Azalea Thomas. What had he gotten himself into? He hadn't intended on hooking up with anyone when he made his way to the bar a few nights ago. He certainly hadn't intended to hook up with a combat medic trying to work out her demons. But something at the bar had clicked, and the rest was history.

A fly by night wasn't his sort of thing. At least not usually. What would Jennifer, his wife back on New Avalon say? Would he even tell her. Would she even care? It had been three long years since he had seen his wife and son, who was now a very precocious six years old. It all seemed so far away.

And here he was, having a daliance with a medic on a whim from some bar. What had the war done to him? No, that wasn't fair. He had always been comfortable with the idea of war, had always been fighting some war or another. So why was he messing everything up with a blonde from Belladonna?

To be fair, he wasn't messsing up much of anything. Nobody from his unit would bat an eye at his sly little affair. And it wasn't anything serious, anthing more than two soldiers passing in the night. But someohow it felt different.

His mind turned to Azalea. She was as much a part of this as he was. At first he thought she was just out for a one night stand, but in between their lovemaking he had figured out that she was trying to escape from some inner demons. This was her release. This was her life to live.

He had never much taken notice of the staff that kept a unit running, medics and doctors among them. War was so insulated for him inside his cockpit that it sometimes never seemed as though it was taking place with real people. But this had changed things. She was real. Her pain was real. And her love of life was real as well.

He probably would never see her again, but the impact that she had on his life was more concrete than the thick walls of a Castle Brian. Whatever happened, he would be forever changed in the way that he dealt with life. With war. Something had changed inside him, and he didn't know if it was for the better or for the worse going forward.

Azalea awoke to the smell of bacon. She was sure it was bacon, even though she hadn't opened her eyes. She couldn't recall the last time that she'd smelled bacon.

        "Rise and shine, Corporal."

She rubbed the sleep from her eyes and sat up. Will Tanner  was seated at the room's small table, two plates in front of him.

        "Bacon?" She asked.

He nodded. "Being a mechjock has it's perks. We can occasionally splurge when we're out on the town, and you, miss Azalea, are the benefactor."

"You were sent from heaven!" She made a quick dash around the bed to secure her bra and panties, donning them quickly and taking the seat opposite Will.

"Not exactly. Just from the complimentary breakfast. Beats the chow back at the base, I'll wager."

She nodded hungrily as she took in her plate. Scrambled eggs, bacon, and a bagel. She hadn't eaten this well in a long time. "I knew sinking my claws into a Mechwarrior would have it's benefits"

He chuckled. "Is that what it was? All about the breakfast?"

She downed a bite of the bagel before responding. "As if." She paused. "It dawned on me last night, you're with the Fox's Teeth, aren’t you?"

He nodded as he took a bite of his eggs. "Guilty as charged. We don't exactly go around advertising it, but yes, you're right."

“So why were you slumming it with the regulars?”

He shook his head. “We’re no different at the end of the day. Just a bit crazier.”

“You guys are famous. Everyone has heard of you guys.”

He shrugged. “That’s the only difference. We’re kind of famous. At the end of the day, what we do is no more or less valuable than the infantryman slogging it out on the front.”

“Still doesn’t explain what you were doing in a dive bar looking for pool partners.”

He tilted his head. “I found you, didn’t I? Something interesting. I never did get your story.”

“Not much to tell. I’m from Belladonna, came from a decent family. I got a good education, I’ve always been into medicine. I knew I wanted to heal people. But I just stumbled on the recruiter one day, and that was the beginning of the story. I never imagined that I would be here, seeing the things I’ve seen, doing the things I’ve done. It still kind of sweeps me away.”

“Fair enough. So what are your plans?”

            She shrugged. “For today?”

“Yeah. You’ve obviously got down time, what do you plan on doing with it now that you’ve snared your Mechwarrior?”

She chuckled. “You give me too much credit. I was just looking for a good time. A release. You obliged. I hadn’t planned anything out beyond that.”

He nodded. “Ever seen the inside of a ‘Mech?”

She choked up slightly. “Once or twice. Not good experiences.”

“Well, then let’s change that. My girl is amazing, and I’d love to show her to you.”

She smiled. “I don’t know why, but that sounds like fun. Can you just show them off to anybody?”

“You’re not just anybody. You’re enlisted. You’re AFFS. It’s easy enough to pull off.”

She nodded in agreement. “Sounds like a date. I’ll have to get back to base and get changed.”

“Meet me back here at 1000 hours. You’ll get to se a beauty.”

A few hours later, having returned to base and changed into fatigues, she met him back at the hotel and the two made their way to the makeshift mechbay. He led her to a near pristine WSP-3S Wasp.

“It’s smaller than I would have thought.”

He shook his head. “I’m going to pass on that. But I get your point, she’s tiny compared to some of the big boys. Only twenty tons. But she’s fast, and she’s gotten me through many a fight.”

“You’ve seen a lot of action?”

He nodded. “More than I care to admit, but yeah. And she’s gotten me through it all. Come on, lets climb inside.”

She took a deep breath before following him up the gantry. The last time she was in a Mech cockpit, she had been fighting desperately to save the life of a young Mechwarrior. She had failed, and the boy had died. It was a moment that would haunt her forever.

He climbed in and took her arm to guide her through the hatch into the cockpit. It had a worn in smell to it, not factory new, but not what it would be like in the heat of battle.

Will sat down in the cockpit seat. Zee knelt beside him.

“This girl has a full head ejection system, so if I ever need to bail out, the whole head goes with me. Much safer than ejecting into the wild..”

She could tell he was proud of the machine, but to her it was a beast of war. She had so many emotions running through her, memories of Levi Fennimore bleeding out in his Thunderbolt as she was unable to save him. She knew it was irrational, but it was the truth.

            “What’s wrong?” he asked.

She shook her head. “Nothing. Just ghosts, that’s all. Ghosts of my own making.”

“I’m sorry. If it makes you feel uncomfortable, we can leave.”

“No, it’s alright.” She slid up and straddled him in the cockpit seat. “I need to reclaim this. I need to move past it.”

He looked puzzled. “I don’t know what that means.”

She took his face in her hands and kissed him deeply. “Oh.” He replied.

The cramped quarters of a Battlemech cockpit didn’t leave them much room, but they didn’t need much. Awkwardly they worked each other free of their clothes and let instinct take over. She gripped the bar above the cockpit window, letting him run his hands over her body. She rode him to the brink of ecstasy and back again, letting her mind run free as her body responded to his touch.

Finally satisfied, she slumped into his embrace. He held her tightly. “That was…unexpected.”

She laughed. “Lots of bad energy to work out. I take it you’ve never done that before?”

He chuckled softly to himself. “I can’t say as I’ve ever used the cockpit for that particular form of recreation before, but there’s a first time for everything. Are you sure you’re okay?”

She nodded. “I’m sure. Just a lot of bad memories tied up in the cockpit of a Mech. A different mech, to be sure. Needed to expunge them.”

He laughed. “You realize I’m never going to be able to take this cockpit seriously again. It will always have the energy of…that.”

            She smiled. “Good or bad?”

“Good. I think. Just different. This has always been a personal space for me. It means a lot to let someone in. I’m not trying to be all emotional or anything, just, you know.”

            “I know.”

The sound of a tech approaching sent her scurrying for her clothes, and she dressed quickly.

“You know we’ll probably never see each other again. Hell, I won’t even know if you live or die.”

He nodded. “I know. Doesn’t change anything. Just two people, trying to find their way. I hope that I helped you a little bit.”

She kissed him on the forehead. “You did. I don’t know what the future holds, but at least I’ve lived a little.”

The two climbed free of the cockpit and down into the mechbay.

She grabbed his hand. “When will you know when you’re moving out?”

He looked at the sun high in the sky. “Same time as you, most likely. No way of knowing where we’ll be headed. Same deal as you. Just moving on.”

“You think we’ll meet on Terra?”

“It’s my sincere hope, Corporal. No way to know, but hope is all we have.”

Learning to play was fun. She didn’t even order any more drinks, she just soaked in the exhilharation of doing something so mundane and fun. Will taught her the basics, and in no time, she was reasonably competent at playing.

She didn’t know how much time had passed, but the bartender hollered that it was last call. She didn’t want the night to end. She didn’t want this life to end. Tomorrow would be more blood and guts, but tonight she was living for the first time in a long time.

“Guess this is where we part ways, Zee. I hope you had a good night.”

She didn’t know why, but she slid her arm into his. “Does it have to end?”

She was running on adrenaline and autopilot now. She didn’t know why she didn’t want the night to end, but she simply didn’t.

            “That’s a loaded question, Corporal”

“I’m serious. You picked me for a reason, the night doesn’t have to end. What do you have waiting for you?”

He smiled coyly. “A nice date with a real bed in a hotel a few blocks from here. They put us Mechwarriors up pretty well.”

She grinned. “Big enough for two?”

He chuckled. “Rather bold of you, Corporal”

“No timid medics in the field, Mechjock”

She didn’t know why she was doing this. It was the last thing on her mind when she had left the base for the evening, but now she wanted a connection more than anything. Something real. Something to survive on.

Less than half an hour later, they were in Will’s room at one of the pricier hotels on Towne. It had been quite some time since she had been with a guy. She was aggressive, making sure that she got what she wanted.

Will was happy to oblige her, and the two went on for what seemed like hours. Finally, she found herself laying on her back, her eyes closed, letting her heartbeat return to normal.

“You don’t mess around, do you?” he asked.

“No, I’m not normally like this. Tonight was just….different. I needed to let go. You have no idea what it’s like picking up the pieces of the mess that you soldiers make.”

“I have some fair idea. But I take your point. So, did it work?”

She opened her eyes. “It did. For a while. It’s still there, but it’s quiet right now.”

            “Why do you do it?”

She paused. “I don’t rightly know. I enlisted for some adventure, but I never imagined anything like this. Now….it’s like I do it because it’s all I have. It’s all that keeps me going. I can still remember the first Mechwarrior I lost in the field. It’s like I have blood on my hands ever since. I have to keep going, because you guys keep destroying things.”

He rubbed her shoulder gently. “Don’t you think that’s a bit harsh?”

“I didn’t mean it like that. I know that this is a just war. It must happen. The Blakists must be stopped. But that’s all so macro-level. It’s the micro where things break down, where things hurt.”

            “Have you been in long?”

“Only a few years. I never dreamed I would see action, I signed up before the whole Jihad cooked off. You?”

“I’ve been in forever. I knew I wanted to be a Mechwarrior from the time I could form a sentence. It’s just in my blood. It’s in my family. This isn’t my first fight. I fought in the Civil War. That’s where I learned my trade. That was a just war too, kicking Katherine off the throne. But it doesn’t matter, it’s just what I do, it’s who I am.”

“Do you think we will win this one?”

“We have to. There has to be something better than the Blakist tyranny. It has to end.”

She sighed. “But will it ever end? Or will there just be another war after this one? And another one after that? Seems to be all we’re good at is war.”

“I don’t know, there’s something more to this one. Something that says maybe it will end things once and for all. That we’ll get back the state that we love and we can just all live in a state of peace. Or at least a state of not war. This thing is going to be huge. It’s going to end on Terra.”

            “Have you ever been there?”

“Me? Never. Never held much allure for me either. But it’s where everything started, and it’s where it all has to end. I just hope I’m alive to see the end.”

“You and me both. I’ve never really thought of the end of all this. It has to end, but I’ve never given it a thought since this whole thing started. It’s like I’ve been living my life on autopilot, no control over anything. At least you guys get to shape how things go.”

He pulled her closer to him. “But we’re all still just pieces of the machine. I break things. You fix them. We keep on going. We serve the Princess, we serve the Suns. We just keep going.”

She nestled herself closer to his body. “Philosophy 101. On the battlefield. I’m glad we had this.”

“I didn’t mean for this to happen.”

            “Do you regret it?”

“No regrets. We keep on going. What’s next for you, Corporal?”

She sighed heavily. “Wherever the next fight is. I’m sure there will be a next fight. I hate being space-side, so I hope that it’s quick. What about you?”

“I have no idea. We go where the danger is. I’m not sure if we’ll be stationed with this group the whole time or if we’ll be detatched. It’s the nature of the beast.”

That was when it dawned on her. The 7th Lancers. This guy was part of the Fox’s Teeth. He would be seeing the harshest of the harsh action in this war. He would be seeing far more prominent battlefields than she would. If she made it. She kept reminding herself, if she made it.

            “Thank you.” She said.

            “For what?”

“For this. For helping me feel alive for a little while. For reminding me why we do what we do. For doing what you do.”

With that, she fell asleep. A calm, peaceful sleep for the first time in a long time.
